Off Kilter

I wasn’t sure what to write about today. It’s been a weird week, as it’s school holidays, so my routine is completely thrown off kilter. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, as it does give me time to think about what I’m doing, and whether that’s what I want to be doing.
For once in my life, I can actually say that I’m really happy with where I’m at. I know my writing career is well on its way, and as long as I stay up to date with changes in the publishing world, I can make (at least a part time) living from my writing.
(On this note, The Caretaker of Imagination is with the illustrator. She’ll be done by Christmas and I’m looking at a Feb 2015 release date).
This is important because it gives me the opportunity to create more – writing and art and music – without being a financial strain. It also means I can do more voluntary work and give something back to the world.
Basically, between now and Christmas I have 3 goals:
-Write and read lots.
-Exercise regularly and eat well.
-Enjoy life and cherish my friendships.
The main thing that’s been stopping me from reading and fiction writing is that there are always a million things on my mind.
I’m trying to deal with that by setting aside Friday as ‘my day’. I do have work in the afternoon, but the day is totally dedicated to reading and writing and just pausing to enjoy my life.
The other days are split between my other work (social media and planning), gym, music, art, blogging and professional development.  I’m still working out how strict a schedule I need for those.
I think I’ll call this post ‘off kilter’.

  1. I hear you on being off kilter! I’m looking forward to school going back and us being able to go back to our regular routines 🙂 And, I’m very much looking forward to starting life without academia in it lol. It’s great to hear that things are advancing for you! I can’t wait to see how the book turns out. Are we going to get snippets of illustrations before the release?

    1. Yeah I bet you are! You’ll have so much more time to do more of the stuff you love – and just time to stop, as well!

Yes. It feels solidified now that I can actually create a date (ish) – I’m actually publishing a book!!

I will definitely post snippets of illustrations / sketches as I can. I usually catch up with Jane every few weeks so I’ll be able to get updates from her 🙂

  2. Congrats on getting your release date more narrowed down! School holidays are such a mindfuck when it comes to routines (but good in other ways, hah). I’m only just now getting used to working 3 days and being off 4 days, to the point where IMO actually productive on my extra off days and don’t just have a double lounging weekend. And it’s been like half a year :p

    1. Haha it does take a while! I’ve been better since I started seeing writing & blogging as work, not just as a hobby, cause then I don’t feel guilty spending time on it AND I don’t feel like I’m being lazy by working part time (which is a whole nother post). And yes, I am glad to have a more definitive date! Helps with planning.

  3. Oh how I relate … life is busy. I have read this week, well a little but have not written and don’t seem to be able to clear my mind enough to write at the moment. My goal for 2015 is to try and finish putting my Anthology together. I am overwhelmed with information as to how to publish. Traditional or self publish. What do you ladies think?

    1. For poetry, I really think selfie is the way to go, unless you’re looking at submitting single poems to other anthologies.

For novels, it depends what you want out of it. Having said that, you really need to *enjoy* the whole publishing / marketing aspect of writing to self publish successfully (not that I have yet, but based on what I’ve seen others do).

  4. It really has been a strange week. I am excited about your upcoming release of The Caretaker of Imagination, looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I have signed up for a bunch of MOOC’s this week, now I just have to find the time to dedicate to them. I think it is time to make a little time for myself. I will continue to work on my writing and non-writing projects, but I need a little me time too!

    1. Yes! Me time had gone right out the window. There’s not a lot of point in making progress if I’m not actually letting myself stop and enjoy life. I might have to make a no – internet day too…

      1. That has basically become my Saturday. Since Jay is gone all week, we have been attempting to spend quality time together. Sunday is his study day, so I find something to do. I think I might be spending the time staring at him, cause I have no clue what I have been doing on Sunday!

It is actually amazing how we (as humans) can get so wrapped up in our lives and forget to enjoy ourselves.
